Why 5K?
27 inches is among the most popular desktop monitor sizes, yet the resolution options available are often a poor fit for the form factor. Most displays ship with either 2560 × 1440 (1440p) or 3840 × 2160 (4K). At 1440p, the pixel density is only 108.8 PPI — comparable to a 21-inch 1080p panel (104.9 PPI) — which is noticeably soft at typical viewing distances. 4K improves on this with 163.2 PPI, but introduces its own problem: scaling.
A 27-inch 4K display cannot be used at 100% scaling without UI elements appearing uncomfortably small. It instead requires fractional scaling — typically 125% or 150% — which renders the interface at a non-integer multiple and then resamples it to fit the physical pixels. The result is a subtle but persistent softness across text and UI elements. Fractional scaling also lacks robust support on most Linux distributions.
A 27-inch 5120 × 2880 display resolves both issues. At 217.6 PPI, it supports exact 2× (HiDPI) scaling, rendering content at the equivalent of 1440p while doubling every logical pixel to a 2×2 block of physical pixels. The output is perfectly sharp with no resampling artifacts — the same principle behind Retina displays on Apple hardware.
